Through engaging activities and rotating weekly themes, you’ll gain the tools to support your puppy’s development, while your puppy builds confidence and learns essential skills for a lifetime of success.
Socialization Experiences
We’ll introduce your puppy to new experiences in a safe, positive environment, including:
Positive exposure to a variety of people
Positive exposure to and interaction with other puppies
Hearing various sounds and seeing different objects
Practicing body handling and grooming exercises to prepare them for vet visits and care at home
Group Playtime (if they are ready)
In small, supervised groups of 2-3 puppies, your pup will interact and play with other puppies at their own pace. These well-matched play sessions help puppies develop appropriate social behaviors while building confidence and teaching canine communication skills safely. Shyer pups can gain confidence from afar, with breaks built in to prevent overstimulation.
Calm Observation & Confidence Building
We’ll help you teach your puppy how to calmly observe people, other dogs, and distractions, and how to turn everyday outings into positive socialization experiences. These exercises will help your puppy build confidence and focus in a variety of situations.
Basic Manners & Skills
We’ll touch on key foundational behaviors, including:
Name recognition
Hand touch recall
Sit & sit to say please
Drop it
Leash Walking Foundations
We’ll help you and your puppy get started with early leash walking skills and building connection on walks. In class, we’ll introduce the basics of walking on leash, practice walking near distractions without pulling, and show you a simple exercise to help navigate distractions and keep your puppy focused and engaged with you.
Behavior Relief & Problem Prevention
We’ll address common puppy behaviors such as biting, chewing, and digging. We’ll also cover potty training, resource guarding prevention, and share tips to help your puppy become comfortable with being alone. You’ll learn practical strategies to help manage, redirect, and guide these behaviors as your puppy grows.
By the end of the course, your puppy will be more confident and ready to join our KinderTeen class, the next step in training.
The first few months of your puppy’s life—especially the critical socialization period from 3 to 16 weeks—are the most important for shaping their future behavior and confidence. This time is essential for forming positive associations that will influence how they respond to the world for the rest of their life.
Why Is Puppy Socialization Important?
Well-socialized puppies grow into more confident, content, and resilient adult dogs. They’re more comfortable in a variety of situations and are less likely to react fearfully or aggressively when faced with new experiences.
Socialization isn’t just about meeting other dogs or new people—although these are important parts of the big picture. It’s about exposing your puppy to everyday sights, sounds, environments, objects, handling, plus meeting other dogs and people all in a safe, structured, and positive way. The goal is to build your puppy’s confidence while teaching them that the world is a safe and exciting place.
Making the Most of the Socialization Period
While manners training can be done at any age, socialization has a limited window and should be your top priority during this stage. The time you spend with your puppy now is best focused on strengthening your bond and socializing them in a positive and structured way.
Based on recommendations from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), puppies can begin socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. We recommend starting classes once your puppy has been in your home for at least a week.
Our Puppy Start Right Preschool class
Our puppy class is designed to help you maximize this critical period. The entire class flows through a variety of socialization activities to give your puppy the best start. You’ll learn how to safely socialize your puppy while addressing common challenges like biting, jumping, and chewing. We’ll also introduce foundational skills like name recognition, “sit,” and “trade,” and practice handling exercises to prepare your puppy for real-world situations like vet visits and grooming.
By the end of the program, you’ll have a more confident puppy who’s ready for the next stage of training and adventures together.
